Why Train in Karate?
Why train in Karate?
Karate training holds many benefits aside from the obvious one which is Self Defence. It also encourages:
Fitness and Weight Loss
Karate is an anaerobic and aerobic workout, exercising all the main muscle groups. The movements that we train are great for toning muscle. General training improves overall fitness, health and well being.

Many people try the gym for fitness and weight loss, but the sad fact is that many stop going after a couple of months. Some of the reasons are Lack of motivation, nobody being there to motivate them and people just finding pushing weights and running on tread mills a means to an end.
Karate classes are taken by an instructor who will motivate and give direction. All students are treated the same. When students are more settled into classes they wear a white karate suit the same as everyone else. Karate is a bit more than a means to an end, it is an art with students constantly learning and working toward their next grade.
Self-Defence
The original purpose of Karate was a form of empty handed self defence. Karate training covers a multitude of self defence concepts and has an answer for most 'HAPV'-habitual acts of physical violence. The first principle is to avoid confrontation and the second is to escape confrontation. Using Karate is an absolute last resort.

It is a sad fact, but we are living in an increasingly violent world. Most high streets turning into battle grounds on Friday and Saturday nights. Gangs of youths intimidating and causing trouble to decent people because it`s fun and schools seem powerless to stop bullying. A mountain of red tape and steps to follow before an anti social individual can be expelled or reported to the police.
Karate won't give you the super powers to sort out society`s ills, but it will give you the tools to deal with a situation if needed. We generally find that most karate students dont get involved in violence or become a victim of a bully. This is down to students being more aware, and knowing to avoid fights and places of trouble. Also part of training is developing confidence, most bullies prefer to target the unconfident and weak.
Discipline and Courtesy
Karate training has a tradition of strong etiquette. Our classes are not taught in a strict tyrannical way. They are taught in an enviroment of mutual respect, respect for your instructor and respect for fellow students. People tend to learn more if they are enjoying themselves. By students understanding that they must behave as a student of Karate as opposed to just simply behaving, puts a different edge on things. This has a positive effect on some of our younger students with positive behaviour spilling over to normal life.

Karate etiquette teaches the virtues of discipline, courtesy and respect.
"Take away the punches, kicks, blocks, strikes and stances, the kata, and self defense techniques from many of the fighting arts and there is nothing left. However, take these away from Karate and what remains is a moral foundation"
Confidence, discipline
respect, courtesy
mental and physical coordination, flexibility
and inner security.
All ages are welcome.
